Calgary police are searching for a group of suspects from Ontario in connection with a series of taxi frauds that took place in the city last summer.
The investigation began in July 2024 after police received 19 reports of taxi-related frauds within just five days. Investigators believe the incidents were carried out by the same individuals.
According to police, the scheme involved a suspect approaching a stranger and pretending to need help paying for a cab ride. Claiming the driver wouldn’t accept cash, the suspect would ask the victim to pay using their bank card, offering cash in exchange.
The driver—who was allegedly working with the suspect—would hand the victim a point-of-sale terminal and claim the tap feature was not working, prompting the victim to insert their card and enter their PIN. Police say the PIN was captured using a skimming device, and the victim’s card was later swapped with a stolen one.
The suspects then used the victims’ cards to withdraw cash or purchase prepaid gift cards. In some cases, suspects posed as actual taxi drivers and used the same tactic on real customers. Police confirmed the individuals involved were not licensed Calgary taxi operators.
Similar scams have been reported in Edmonton, Toronto, and Metro Vancouver. Following a joint investigation, police have issued Alberta-wide warrants for four Ontario-based suspects. They are collectively facing 64 charges linked to 18 incidents in Calgary alone, which resulted in 16 victims losing more than $28,000.
Photos of the suspects have been released as police continue efforts to locate them.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Calgary police or Crime Stoppers.
