The governments of Canada and Alberta have announced a proposed agreement aimed at speeding up the approval process for major development projects.
In a joint statement Friday, the two governments said the deal would introduce a “one project, one review” approach to assessing major projects and their impacts, including environmental considerations.
Under the draft agreement, projects that fall under Alberta’s jurisdiction, particularly in the non-renewable resource sector, would rely primarily on the provincial regulatory process. Federal and provincial reviews would be integrated when projects involve federal lands or jurisdiction.
Premier Danielle Smith said the agreement is a meaningful step that removes the need for federal approvals for projects clearly within Alberta’s authority. She added the change will help projects move forward faster.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said the agreement represents the next phase of cooperation between Ottawa and Alberta following last year’s major energy partnership.
