Speculation in Ottawa is growing that Mélanie Joly may exit cabinet in the coming weeks if the right opportunity arises. Multiple sources — both Liberal and otherwise — say Joly is interested in becoming Canada’s Ambassador to France.
The prestigious posting comes with notable perks, including access to elite social events and residence at the historic Hôtel de Rigny in Paris’ upscale 8th arrondissement, located close to the Élysée Palace, home of the French president.
It would be an intriguing twist if Prime Minister Mark Carney were to send Joly to Paris, effectively removing her from cabinet — particularly since the role is currently filled by Stéphane Dion. In 2017, then–Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reassigned Dion to Europe as a way of moving him out of cabinet, first appointing him ambassador to Germany and later to France in 2022.
