Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson will brief B.C. Liberal MPs today on the federal government’s anticipated energy agreement with Alberta, as tensions grow over how the proposal has been handled.
Last week, B.C. Liberal MPs emphasized that any pipeline heading to the West Coast must have approval from affected First Nations communities and from the B.C. government — echoing recent government messaging.
Prime Minister Mark Carney reiterated in the House of Commons on Tuesday that British Columbia “has to agree” before any pipeline to the Pacific can move forward.
The province has voiced strong objections in recent days, with Premier David Eby calling it “unacceptable” that Ottawa and Alberta were negotiating a potential pipeline pathway through B.C. without directly involving his government.
Hodgson, responding to reporter questions this week, said Ottawa will engage with B.C. “in short order,” while emphasizing that the province has benefited from federally supported major projects more than any other jurisdiction.
Carney is expected to formally reveal details of the memorandum of understanding with Alberta during his visit to Calgary on Thursday.
