The federal government will announce a $50-billion fund to support local infrastructure projects in next week’s budget, with funding earmarked for housing, transportation, and health infrastructure such as hospitals and emergency services, a senior government official told The Globe and Mail.

The budget will also outline plans to retire aging military fleets to cut maintenance costs while the Canadian Forces await billions of dollars in new equipment under an expanded defence spending program.

According to a second senior official, the budget will include up to $1 billion aimed at attracting top research talent from the United States and around the world, part of a broader effort to strengthen Canada’s innovation and knowledge economy.

At the same time, the government plans to introduce tens of billions in targeted savings, including the cancellation of the national tree-planting initiative that aimed to plant two billion trees by 2031, a third senior official confirmed.

The Globe is not naming the officials because they were not authorized to discuss the budget details publicly.
