Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping later this week during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea — a move signaling a potential thaw in relations between the two countries.
Carney said the talks will cover “a broad range of issues,” including trade, investment, and the evolving global system.
The planned meeting follows Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand’s recent visit to Beijing, where she met with her Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi.
“We’re in the process of resetting expectations about where the relationship can go,” Carney told reporters during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The upcoming meeting will be the first formal encounter between Canadian and Chinese leaders since former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met Xi in 2017. Relations between the two countries have been strained for years, particularly after the 2018 arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver at the request of U.S. authorities.
