Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is accusing Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government of practising what he calls “counterfeit Conservatism,” arguing the Liberals are borrowing Conservative ideas without following through on them.

Poilievre says while Carney has adopted elements of the Conservative platform — including ending the consumer carbon price — his government cannot be trusted to deliver on those promises.

Carney is widely viewed as steering the Liberal Party toward the political centre after years of more centre-left policies under former prime minister Justin Trudeau.

That shift has already caused friction within Liberal ranks. Former environment minister Steven Guilbeault recently resigned from Carney’s cabinet, saying the government is dismantling climate policies he helped put in place.

In a year-end interview with The Canadian Press, Poilievre said the key challenge for Conservatives is convincing voters that the Liberals’ new positioning is more about optics than action.

“The challenge is to show that they’re not actually doing what they say they’re doing,” Poilievre said.
