Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is set to address party members in Calgary this evening, in a highly anticipated speech expected to set the tone for the party as it looks ahead to the next federal election.
The Conservatives officially kicked off their national convention on Thursday, with delegates gathering to debate policy and demonstrate support for Poilievre’s leadership. Party insiders expect the convention to serve as a show of strength for the leader, who has energized the party’s base.
Conservative MP Andrew Scheer says Poilievre’s leadership has drawn new faces to the event. He believes many delegates attending the convention for the first time are there specifically because of Poilievre.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is also scheduled to speak at the convention, adding to the prominence of the Alberta gathering. However, several other conservative premiers will be absent.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford will not attend, as his Progressive Conservative Party is holding its own convention in Ontario this weekend — a date set after the federal Conservatives announced their plans. Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston and Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe are also skipping the event. Moe has publicly wished Poilievre well and said he expects the Conservative leader to receive strong backing from delegates.
Despite some notable absences, party organizers say the focus remains firmly on Poilievre’s address and the direction he will chart for the Conservatives heading into the next election cycle.
