Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is demanding the federal government end the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) program, arguing it is shutting young Canadians out of the job market.
Speaking at a news conference Wednesday in Mississauga, Ont., Poilievre accused the Liberals of allowing businesses to replace local workers with low-wage labour from abroad.
“The Liberals have to answer why is it that they’re shutting our own youth out of jobs and replacing them with low-wage, temporary foreign workers from poor countries who are ultimately being exploited,” he said. “We want Canadian workers to have Canadian jobs. We want to bring back high wages.”
Poilievre singled out fast-food chains, including Tim Hortons and Booster Juice, alleging they are turning to the TFW program over hiring Canadians. He pledged to highlight what he called “the most egregious cases of corporate elites profiting by shutting Canadians out of jobs in favour of low-wage, temporary foreign workers.”
The Conservative leader also criticized Prime Minister Mark Carney, saying the Liberal government has failed to deliver on promised infrastructure projects and is heading toward a higher deficit than under Justin Trudeau.
“The time has come for decisive action, to stop the Liberals from using our immigration system to pad the pockets of corporate elites and other insiders, at the expense of Canadian jobs,” Poilievre said.
