Calgary police are investigating after a house in the city’s northeast was struck by gunfire late Saturday, an incident authorities say is connected to a series of extortion cases affecting members of the South Asian community.
Officers responded to reports of shots fired in the Redstone area near Redstone Common at about 10:30 p.m. Several bullets hit a residence, but no one was inside at the time and no injuries were reported.
Police confirmed Monday to 660 NewsRadio that they believe extortion played a role in the targeted shooting. Extortion involves forcing individuals or organizations to hand over money, property, or services through threats or intimidation.
Investigators say the Redstone incident appears linked to another shooting reported around 10 p.m. the same night in the nearby community of Taradale. In that case as well, a home was targeted while unoccupied, and no injuries occurred.
No suspects have been arrested in either incident.
According to Calgary police, there have been 12 reported extortion attempts aimed at members of the city’s South Asian community since July 2025. Similar cases have been reported elsewhere in Canada and have included gunfire, threats, and demands for large sums of money. Police say investigations into these extortion-related incidents began in 2024, with some cases also involving individuals in Edmonton.
Of the 12 reported attempts in Calgary, nine involved shootings at homes, businesses, or vehicles, all without injuries.
