The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) says it will end its overtime ban early Monday and instead stop delivering commercial flyers as its contract dispute with Canada Post drags on.

The new job action takes effect Sept. 15 at 12:01 a.m. ET. CUPW president Jan Simpson urged the Crown corporation to return to the bargaining table, stressing that a deal should be reached before the busy holiday season.

Postal workers have refused overtime shifts since late May while pressing for a new collective agreement. In response to Canada Post’s most recent offer, the union tabled a counter-proposal last month that sought higher wages while allowing some flexibility for part-time staff.

Canada Post has yet to formally respond, saying CUPW’s demands must reflect what it calls the corporation’s “dire financial realities.” The postal service says it is losing millions of dollars each day, with uncertainty over labour negotiations compounding the strain on its operations.
