Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced she will give a televised address on Thursday, one week before the provincial budget is released.
The premier revealed the address during an unrelated news conference in Calgary but did not provide details on the topics to be covered. A spokesperson for Smith’s office said further information would be released later.
In one of her recent major public statements, Smith pledged a referendum on provincial separation if enough citizens signed a petition.
Finance Minister Nate Horner is scheduled to present the budget on Feb. 26. Alberta is forecasting a $6.4-billion deficit for the fiscal year ending in March, a dramatic swing from an $8.3-billion surplus the previous year.
