Premier Danielle Smith and her Alberta Next panel encountered a more divided crowd Wednesday night during their second town hall, held in east Edmonton. The reception stood in contrast to the more supportive audience they faced a day earlier in Red Deer.

Although branded as the Sherwood Park town hall, the event took place in a hotel ballroom in west Edmonton, drawing a lively crowd of around 500 people, with more than 40,000 tuning in via livestream.

Over the course of the evening, 72 speakers addressed the panel—some more than once—sharing their thoughts primarily on six key topics outlined on the Alberta Next website, all focused on the province’s evolving relationship with Ottawa.

This was the second stop in the panel’s province-wide tour, following a well-received launch in Red Deer on Tuesday. While many in Edmonton expressed support, others challenged the panel on various issues, making for a more mixed and passionate exchange.
