Prime Minister Mark Carney has reaffirmed his statements made at the World Economic Forum last week, despite assertions from the U.S. administration that he attempted to retract some of his comments during a recent phone conversation.

“Let me be very clear — what I said in Davos reflects my true position,” Carney told reporters on Parliament Hill on Tuesday. “We were addressing a wider set of issues, and Canada was among the first to recognize the shift in U.S. trade policy and respond accordingly.”

Carney confirmed that he spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday and described the conversation as “very productive,” covering a broad range of topics.

The clarification comes after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Fox News that Carney “aggressively” tried to backtrack on certain statements during the call.

“I was in the Oval Office today. The Prime Minister spoke with the president and very aggressively walked back some of the unfortunate remarks he made in Davos,” Bessent said in an interview on Fox News’ Hannity program Monday evening.
