Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to travel to China next week for talks focused on trade, energy, agriculture, and international security, his office confirmed.

The Prime Minister’s Office has not yet said whether Carney will hold a face-to-face meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the visit.

Carney is scheduled to depart for China on Jan. 13 and return on Jan. 17.

Canada–China relations have been strained in recent years, particularly over trade. Ottawa imposed a 100 per cent tariff on Chinese electric vehicles, along with a 25 per cent import tax on steel and aluminum.

In response, China introduced a 100 per cent tariff on several Canadian agricultural products, including canola oil and peas, and added a 25 per cent levy on pork and seafood imports.

Carney last met Xi on Oct. 31 at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in South Korea, marking the first official meeting between leaders of Canada and China since 2017.
