Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a slate of large-scale infrastructure projects designed to stimulate Canada’s economy, create jobs, and reduce economic reliance on the United States.
These initiatives, described as being in the “national interest,” come in response to the ongoing fallout from U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war and tariff policies.
The U.S. trade measures have driven up operating costs for Canadian businesses, contributing to a slowdown in economic growth. Canada’s GDP has recently declined, and the national unemployment rate rose above 7% in August.
The newly announced projects will target key sectors such as energy, materials, and shipping and logistics. Carney emphasized the focus on Canadian resources and labour.
“To strengthen Canada’s independence, our resilience, our security, we will build with Canadian steel, Canadian lumber, Canadian aluminum—and by Canadian tradespeople and engineers,” Carney stated.
The initiative is positioned as a major step toward economic self-reliance and long-term national stability.
