The Alberta government is investing $50 million into a major infrastructure project to help accommodate Airdrie’s booming population, which recently surpassed 90,000 residents.
The funding will go toward building a new seven-kilometre wastewater pipeline connecting Airdrie to Calgary’s existing system. Officials say the project will pave the way for significant residential, commercial, and industrial expansion.
“The pipeline will support new serviced subdivisions, allowing for up to 45,000 new housing units as well as future business development,” said Devin Dreeshen, Alberta’s Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors. “It may not be glamorous, but it’s critical infrastructure that will make a difference in people’s daily lives.”
Since 2022, Airdrie’s population has grown by more than 25 per cent. Without this provincial investment, the city would have needed to build its own wastewater treatment facility — a much costlier and more complex undertaking.
Airdrie Mayor Peter Brown called the announcement timely and transformational.
“This comes at a very pivotal time in our growth,” said Brown. “We crossed the 90,000-resident mark this year, bringing us closer to becoming Alberta’s third-largest municipality. This will be the single largest provincial investment ever made directly in the City of Airdrie.”
The province hopes the infrastructure upgrade will serve as a model for other municipalities to prioritize essential long-term planning.
