The provincial government is launching a formal inspection into how the City of Calgary handled two major breaks in the Bearspaw South feeder main that occurred within less than two years.

Dan Williams, Alberta’s Minister of Municipal Affairs, said his office will review the city’s response to the incidents that happened in June 2024 and again in December 2025.

“Given the recurring nature of this situation and the severe impact it is having on the daily lives of Calgarians and surrounding communities, all of whom rely on a safe, reliable water system to support their families and businesses, I believe an inspection is necessary,” Williams said in a statement.

He added that the decision to launch the inspection was not taken lightly.

The investigation was first announced earlier this year after the province required the City of Calgary to provide thousands of documents related to the incidents. The materials include records from closed-door meetings and other internal communications.

Williams said the goal of the review is to ensure the water system serving Calgary’s roughly 1.6 million residents remains safe and reliable.

The Bearspaw South feeder main is a key piece of infrastructure that carries treated water from the city’s northwest treatment facilities to communities across Calgary and surrounding areas. Breaks in the line have previously led to significant water restrictions and disruptions for residents and businesses.
