The Alberta government says it will conduct a safety review of a highway intersection near Stavely following a deadly crash that claimed the lives of three junior hockey players on their way to practice.
The collision occurred Monday at a highway access point in the town of Stavely, located just over an hour south of Calgary. The players, members of the Southern Alberta Mustangs, were travelling east across the highway when their vehicle was struck by a northbound semi-truck pulling two gravel-filled trailers.
Alberta’s transportation ministry said fatal crashes are always treated with seriousness and are routinely reviewed as part of standard procedure.
Officials say the assessment will examine traffic patterns and collision history at the intersection, along with lighting and other safety considerations, to determine whether changes or upgrades are warranted.
