The Punjab government has declared all 23 districts of the state as flood-affected, following days of relentless rainfall and rising river levels that have triggered widespread destruction. As of Tuesday, the disaster has claimed 30 lives and impacted over 3.5 lakh residents.
Pathankot has reported the highest number of casualties with six deaths, followed by Ludhiana with four. Three individuals remain missing in Pathankot, where rescue efforts are ongoing.
While the death toll remains significantly lower than the devastating floods of 1988, which killed over 600 people, the geographic spread of the current flooding is comparably extensive. Many residents have drawn parallels to the 1988 disaster, recalling its horrors as they navigate the current crisis.
The agricultural sector has suffered severely, with over 1.48 lakh hectares of cropland submerged. Gurdaspur is among the hardest-hit districts, with flooding reported in 324 villages. Amritsar and Hoshiarpur have also experienced substantial damage, affecting 135 and 119 villages respectively.
Images from flood-hit areas like Sultanpur Lodhi in Kapurthala district show residents using boats to evacuate and carry belongings to safer locations. Emergency services remain active across the state as relief and rehabilitation efforts continue.
The state government has urged central assistance and is coordinating with disaster response teams to manage the evolving situation.
