A rally is set for Friday outside the constituency office of Alberta Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides, as advocates call for urgent action to address what they describe as a growing crisis in the province’s public education system.

The demonstration, organized by Public Interest Alberta, is aimed at drawing attention to underfunding, overcrowded classrooms, and worsening working and learning conditions in schools.

“Classrooms are bursting at the seams, teachers are burning out and students are falling through the cracks,” said Bradley Lafortune, executive director of Public Interest Alberta. “This government’s neglect has left Alberta’s schools in crisis. Minister Nicolaides and the UCP must start respecting teachers, funding classrooms, and prioritizing kids over politics.”

As part of the event, organizers will deliver an “Alternative Mandate for Education” to the minister’s office. The document calls for:

  • Construction of new schools to ease overcrowding
  • Hiring more teachers, assistants and support staff
  • Investments in safer, more inclusive learning environments
  • Stronger accountability and transparency in public education funding

“Teachers aren’t asking for the moon — they’re asking for enough. Enough support, enough resources, and enough respect,” Lafortune said.
