An Indian-based criminal gang accused of extortion and murder-for-hire operations in Canada has allegedly been acting on behalf of the Indian government, according to a confidential RCMP document obtained by Global News.

The report, prepared by the RCMP’s national security division, references the Lawrence Bishnoi gang’s alleged connections to the Indian government multiple times. The three-page classified assessment was circulated internally last year and released to Global News on Monday through the Access to Information Act.

According to the document, the Bishnoi gang has been expanding its operations internationally, including a growing footprint in Canada.

“The Bishnoi Crime Group is a violent criminal organization with an active, continually expanding presence in several countries, including Canada,” the RCMP report states.

The assessment describes the gang as being motivated primarily by financial gain rather than political or religious ideology. The RCMP alleges the group is involved in a range of criminal activities, including extortion, drug trafficking, money laundering, and contract killings, both domestically and abroad.
