Premier Danielle Smith is now reportedly facing a recall campaign in her Brooks–Medicine Hat riding—the latest United Conservative Party MLA targeted by activists.
Petition organizers shared documents with CTV News indicating that Elections Alberta has approved the recall drive. While the petition has not yet been publicly posted, organizers also provided a letter they say is from Chief Electoral Officer Gordon McClure, confirming that Smith has been formally notified and that the application satisfies the requirements outlined in section 2 of the Recall Act.
Operation Total Recall, a group pushing for recall efforts against multiple UCP representatives, also says paperwork for Smith’s constituency has been submitted. The organizers of the Brooks–Medicine Hat campaign are identified only by first names for safety reasons, and cite two primary motivations: Smith’s perceived weak connection to the community and her government’s use of the notwithstanding clause.
“Smith was placed in this riding through a byelection because there are a lot of voters here who supported her party,” said organizer Heather V. in a statement. “She has no meaningful connection to the community, and constituents have been struggling to get a hold of her to express their concerns.”
