Calgary is under a severe thunderstorm warning Thursday afternoon, with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) cautioning that the storm could bring strong winds, heavy rain, and hail.

The weather agency issued the warning at around 3:45 p.m. as meteorologists tracked a storm system that developed over the foothills and is now moving across the city.

According to ECCC, the thunderstorm is currently situated just south of downtown Calgary and is nearly stationary. Forecasters warn it could produce pea- to dime-sized hail along with intense rainfall.

“Heavy rain may cause localized flooding in low-lying areas, and local travel delays are likely,” the statement reads.

City residents are urged to take precautions, including staying indoors during lightning activity, avoiding low-lying areas prone to flooding, and securing outdoor items that could be blown around by strong winds.

Motorists are being asked not to attempt driving through flooded roadways, as even shallow water can be dangerous and cause vehicles to stall.

The storm comes amid a week of shifting summer weather patterns in southern Alberta, with sunny conditions quickly giving way to fast-developing systems capable of producing severe weather. ECCC advises people to keep a close eye on updated forecasts and alerts.

Environment Canada will continue to monitor the system and issue further warnings or advisories as needed.

For the latest weather updates, residents can visit the ECCC website or follow alerts through local media and the WeatherCAN app.
