Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says she supports Prime Minister Mark Carney’s latest group of major projects selected for potential fast-track approval.

On Thursday, Carney revealed that seven more major energy and infrastructure proposals have been sent to the federal major projects office for review. This follows an initial list of five announced in September.

The new list features a nickel mine in northern Ontario, a hydroelectric project in Iqaluit, as well as a transmission line and an LNG project in northwest British Columbia. Two additional mineral mines — one in Quebec and another in New Brunswick — were also included.

Missing from the list, however, was the bitumen pipeline that Smith’s government has been pushing for. She said negotiations with Ottawa are still underway.

“Right now, we’re working on an agreement with the federal government that would remove, carve out, or overhaul several harmful laws that are driving away private investment in our energy sector, along with a commitment to pursue eventual approval of a bitumen pipeline to Asian markets,” Smith said in a statement.

She noted that discussions are reaching a critical point, and she expects clarity within days on whether Carney’s government will back Alberta’s energy ambitions or maintain the laws introduced under former prime minister Justin Trudeau.

Smith previously said she hoped to secure a deal before this weekend’s CFL Grey Cup. However, Carney told reporters Thursday that although talks have been constructive, several issues still need to be resolved “over the coming weeks.”
