Premier Danielle Smith will be in familiar territory tonight as she hosts a town hall in Medicine Hat, marking the midway point of her provincewide consultations on Alberta’s relationship with Ottawa.
Smith, who represents Brooks-Medicine Hat in the legislature, will be joined by the 15-member panel she appointed to guide the discussions.
The first five town halls have focused on grievances with the federal government, which Smith argues are fuelling separatist sentiment in the province. Six proposed recommendations from her government have been generally welcomed by attendees, but the panel has also encountered criticism and protests at stops in Edmonton and Red Deer.
Tensions flared most recently in Lloydminster, where the audience erupted with cheers for mass deportations and even Alberta separation.
The panel will continue its tour in the weeks ahead, with stops scheduled in Lethbridge, Airdrie, Grande Prairie, and Calgary.
