Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and her panel are set to host another Alberta Next town hall this evening, continuing their push to assert more provincial autonomy from Ottawa.

Following a well-attended event in Red Deer on Tuesday, where many applauded proposals to distance Alberta from federal control—including withdrawing from the Canada Pension Plan and establishing a provincial police force—tonight’s meeting will take place in Edmonton, a stronghold for the Opposition NDP under leader Naheed Nenshi.

Smith has framed the tour as part of a broader effort to promote a vision of a “sovereign Alberta within a united Canada,” while addressing the growing frustration that has sparked renewed talk of separatism in some corners of the province.

However, in Red Deer, several participants said they believed only a formal separation vote would give Alberta the leverage it needs to secure a fairer deal from Ottawa.
