Three recent bear encounters in Alberta’s Kananaskis Country have led to the issuance of new advisories, raising the total to 14.
These incidents occurred on August 1 near the Little Kid Lookout on Kovach Trail, August 2 on Galatea Trail, and August 6 between Mount Shark Road and the Sparrow hawk Day Use area. All involved the use of bear spray.
The August 1 event featured a bluff charge by a bear toward two hikers. On August 2, four hikers with an off-leash dog had a close encounter with a brown bear. The August 6 incident involved a cyclist using bear spray during a grizzly encounter.
Authorities linked this to reports of multiple grizzlies feeding on berries in the area.
Neil Singh, a spokesperson for Forestry and Parks, noted that these were among several encounters over the long weekend. In total, Kananaskis currently has 11 active bear advisories and three area closures.
