Calgary police are investigating a suspicious house fire that killed a dog early Wednesday morning in the city’s southeast.

Firefighters were called to a home on Legacy Reach View S.E., near the 0 to 100 block, just after 5 a.m. The incident prompted a large emergency response, including seven fire engines, EMS, and police units. Roads surrounding the property were shut down, and nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution.

When firefighters entered the home, they encountered heavy smoke but no visible flames. Though the fire was not immediately apparent from the exterior, damage was visible on one side where the siding appeared to be peeling off.

Fire crews expressed concern about the structure’s stability during the response. The home has since been ventilated and cleared.

According to the Calgary Fire Department (CFD), the circumstances surrounding the blaze are considered suspicious. Calgary police have now taken over the investigation.

CTV News spoke with a family who identified themselves as the homeowners. They believe their dog may have accidentally caused the fire in the basement. Tragically, the dog died in the incident.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
