Tragedy struck an Alberta junior hockey team on Monday when three of its players died in a car crash while traveling to practice in Stavely, south of Calgary.

Emergency responders were called to the intersection of Highway 2 and 55 Avenue around 11 a.m. following reports of a collision involving two vehicles.

RCMP reported that a northbound semi-truck carrying gravel collided with a small passenger car traveling east on 55 Avenue. All three occupants of the car were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed the victims included two 18-year-olds from Kamloops, B.C., and a 17-year-old from Alabama.

The truck driver, a 40-year-old resident of Stavely, sustained minor injuries but did not require hospital treatment.

The Southern Alberta Mustangs, based in Stavely about 100 kilometres south of Calgary, confirmed the deaths of their players in a statement on social media. The victims have been identified as JJ Wright, Cameron Casorso, and Caden Fine.

The team described the trio as “more than hockey players” and remembered them as teammates, sons, brothers, friends, and cherished members of the Mustang family. “There are no words that can adequately express the depth of our grief,” the statement read.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith expressed her condolences, calling the incident an “unimaginable loss” for the community.
