Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that his administration will impose new import tariffs starting October 1. The new measures include a 100% tariff on pharmaceutical drugs, a 50% tariff on kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities, a 30% tariff on upholstered furniture, and a 25% tariff on heavy trucks.

Trump made the announcement through posts on his social media platform, Truth Social, reinforcing his long-standing belief that tariffs can help reduce the federal deficit and boost domestic manufacturing.

Despite not offering a specific legal rationale, Trump claimed the tariffs on cabinets and furniture are necessary “for National Security and other reasons.”

The move appears to expand on actions initiated under the Trade Expansion Act of 1962. In April, the administration began a Section 232 investigation into how pharmaceutical and truck imports affect national security.

A similar probe into timber and lumber started in March, although it’s unclear whether that is linked to the furniture tariffs. These new tariffs come amid growing economic uncertainty. While the U.S. stock market remains relatively strong, inflation remains high and job growth is slowing.

Economists warn that additional tariffs could lead to higher consumer prices and reduced hiring — trends that already appear to be emerging in recent data.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell recently noted that rising goods prices are contributing significantly to current inflation levels. Despite pressure from Trump to lower interest rates, the Fed has remained cautious, partly due to the economic instability created by tariff policies.
