U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Keith Kellogg, said in Kyiv Monday that efforts to end the three-year Russia-Ukraine war are progressing, though key challenges remain.
Speaking after attending Ukraine’s National Prayer Breakfast, Kellogg said officials are “working very, very hard” to establish “security guarantees” that would protect Ukraine from future Russian aggression.
This comes a week after Trump claimed he had initiated steps for direct peace talks between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
However, Moscow has signaled that such a summit is unlikely in the near future. Trump said he expects to decide on next steps within two weeks if no progress is made.
Meanwhile, global leaders continue to pour into Kyiv, reflecting growing urgency around the U.S.-led peace initiative. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney pledged CA$2 billion in aid during a visit Sunday, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte met with Zelenskyy on Friday.
Germany’s Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil and Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store also arrived Monday, offering both military and political support.
Norway plans to propose $8.45 billion in aid for Ukraine next year and has pledged nearly $700 million toward air defense systems, including two U.S.-made Patriot systems co-funded with Germany.
Store emphasized that Ukraine is defending vital European principles by resisting Russian territorial claims.
Amid diplomatic activity, drone warfare continues. Ukraine’s Air Force reported intercepting 104 Russian drones overnight, while Russia claimed it downed 23 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions.
