Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday issued a strong warning to Hamas, saying the U.S. would “have no choice but to go in and kill them” if internal violence in Gaza continues.

This marks a sharp escalation in tone from Trump, who earlier in the week had downplayed the internal bloodshed following a ceasefire and hostage exchange agreement between Israel and Hamas, bringing a temporary halt to the two-year conflict.

On Tuesday, Trump had dismissed reports of Hamas cracking down on rival groups in Gaza, saying the group had eliminated “a couple of gangs that were very bad,” and that their deaths “didn’t bother me much.”

However, in a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump warned that the killings within Gaza must stop. While he did not provide specifics on how he would enforce the threat, he made his stance clear: “They will disarm, and if they don’t do so, we will disarm them, and it’ll happen quickly and perhaps violently.”

Since Hamas took power in Gaza 18 years ago, its police force had maintained tight control and suppressed dissent. But as Israeli forces advanced and targeted Hamas infrastructure with airstrikes in recent months, that security structure largely collapsed.

In the power vacuum, armed factions and influential families including some groups opposed to Hamas and reportedly supported by Israel have emerged. These groups have been accused of looting humanitarian aid and profiting from Gaza’s growing humanitarian crisis.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated on Wednesday that Israel would not accept anything less than full compliance from Hamas regarding the hostages.

In response, Hamas’ military wing claimed it had met its obligations under the agreement by handing over all the remains of hostages currently in its possession.
