Tensions within the NATO alliance are deepening as Donald Trump calls on European allies to support his efforts to conclude the ongoing war with Iran. The move is widening existing divisions between the United States and its European partners.

Several NATO member states were already questioning the future of the alliance after controversial remarks from Washington, including suggestions about taking control of Greenland — a territory belonging to a fellow ally.

For Canada, however, the situation presents a unique challenge. Experts emphasize that while political alliances may shift, geographic realities remain constant.

Aurel Braun, a professor of international relations and political science at the University of Toronto, noted that geography continues to shape the relationship between Canada and the United States regardless of political leadership.

NATO was established in 1949 when 12 countries, including Canada, signed the North Atlantic Treaty in Washington, D.C., to ensure collective security against the Soviet Union. Since then, the alliance has expanded to 32 member nations, making it the longest-standing defence pact in modern history.
