Two Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members were stabbed during an incident at a residence in Wainwright, Alberta, a town located southeast of Edmonton near the Saskatchewan border.
According to Alberta RCMP, the stabbing was part of a “larger protracted incident” that occurred on Thursday. Police confirmed that the victims did not know the suspect prior to the attack.
The two injured individuals were initially treated at a hospital in Wainwright. One of them was later transferred to Edmonton for more specialized care. Both are expected to recover, according to authorities.
Lt.-Col. Lena Angell, a spokesperson for the Armed Forces, said three junior CAF members were involved in an altercation with a civilian. She added that several other military members witnessed the fight. The Canadian Armed Forces are fully cooperating with the RCMP investigation.
“All CAF members are expected to uphold the highest standards of professionalism; any incident of misconduct is thoroughly investigated and addressed through appropriate administrative or disciplinary measures,” Angell said in a statement.
A 23-year-old man is facing pending charges of assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. The allegations have not yet been tested in court.
The CAF members involved are stationed at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, which is located approximately 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton. The base is one of Canada’s busiest military training facilities and hosts various army exercises throughout the year.
RCMP say the investigation remains ongoing, and no further details have been released at this time.
