A new report from the Democrat minority on the U.S. Congress’s joint economic committee says American businesses—especially those in border states—are being hurt by a significant drop in Canadian tourism linked to President Donald Trump’s actions.
The report highlights how crucial Canadian visitors are to the U.S. economy. In 2024 alone, Canadian tourism generated $20.5 billion and supported 140,000 American jobs.
According to the authors, Trump’s tariff policies, along with repeated breaks in trade negotiations, rounds of tariffs on Canadian goods and even comments about annexing Canada, have strained diplomatic and economic relations. As a result, states that rely heavily on short-term cross-border travel are feeling the sharpest economic consequences.
“These actions have disrupted diplomatic, economic and trade relations between the United States and Canada — which in turn has hurt U.S. businesses that depend on visitors from Canada,” the report concludes.
