U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has brushed off Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent speech at the World Economic Forum, calling it “political noise,” while also taking aim at Canada’s newly announced agreement with China.
In an interview on Bloomberg TV, Lutnick said Canada already enjoys “the second-best deal in the world” and suggested the prime minister was unfairly criticizing existing trade arrangements. He also warned that Ottawa’s engagement with China could complicate upcoming talks on the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), which is scheduled for review later this year.
Carney’s address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, received strong international attention. In the speech, the prime minister argued that the old global order has collapsed and called on middle-power countries to work together as larger nations increasingly use economic pressure to advance their interests.
European leaders continued to reference Carney’s remarks throughout the Davos meetings, echoing his concerns about a deep shift in long-standing trade and defence relationships.
Adding to the debate, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told Fox News that the world has entered a “new world order,” noting that European officials are beginning to openly recognize the scale of the global realignment.
