Alberta is in for a turbulent Tuesday, with the most dangerous weather expected in areas east of Calgary.
Calgarians saw strong northerly winds and early-morning flurries around 4 a.m., but conditions have since eased, giving the city a relatively calm start. The break won’t last long — winds are forecast to strengthen again this afternoon, shifting from the west at 30 to 50 km/h under mainly cloudy skies.
Calgary’s high of 1 C was already recorded during the early morning hours. Temperatures may briefly return to that mark later in the morning, but an approaching cold front will push readings back below freezing by the afternoon.
Outside the city, regions east along the Trans-Canada Highway are preparing for much harsher conditions. Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a yellow-level winter storm warning, signalling the risk of hazardous winter weather as the system moves through.
