WestJet is expanding its fleet with a major aircraft order, announcing Wednesday it has purchased 67 Boeing planes as part of a long-term renewal plan.

The Calgary-based airline confirmed the order includes seven 787-9 Dreamliners and 60 737-10 MAX narrowbodies, with deliveries scheduled through 2034. WestJet also secured options for an additional 25 737-10 MAX and four Dreamliners.

Currently operating 193 passenger aircraft, WestJet holds an order book of 123 jets plus 40 options. The carrier says the latest deal gives it the largest aircraft order book of any Canadian airline, while doubling its Dreamliner fleet.

“With the addition of these aircraft, WestJet has the largest order book of any airline in Canada and will double our fleet of Dreamliners,” said chief executive Alexis von Hoensbroech, noting the planes are expected to bring significant fuel efficiency gains.

According to Boeing, the 737 MAX family delivers 20 per cent lower fuel use and emissions compared to previous models, along with a 14 per cent reduction in maintenance costs.
