Christmas Day is a statutory holiday across Canada, and many businesses and services in Calgary will be closed or operating on reduced schedules to mark the occasion.
While Christmas Eve and Boxing Day are not recognized as statutory holidays in Alberta, some businesses and city services will run with limited or adjusted hours. Boxing Day is a statutory holiday for federally regulated industries, meaning some workplaces and services will be closed.
Students in elementary, high school and post-secondary institutions in Calgary are on Christmas break, and all major banks will be closed on Christmas Day.
The City of Calgary is also offering a range of seasonal events for residents and visitors looking to celebrate the holiday. One of the highlights is Zoo Lights at the Calgary Zoo, which runs through Jan. 4 and is closed only on Christmas Day.
In addition to its signature light displays, Zoo Lights features activities such as axe throwing, daily interactive programming, festive treats, animal facts and other family-friendly attractions.
Calgarians are encouraged to check directly with businesses and city services for specific holiday hours as schedules may vary throughout the Christmas period.
