Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued an air quality warning for Calgary on Tuesday morning as thick wildfire smoke spread across much of the Prairies.
The alert stretches from Yellowknife down to Calgary and as far east as Saskatchewan. By 6 a.m., several cities — including Calgary and Edmonton — were recording an Air Quality Health Index of 10+, the maximum level on the scale.
ECCC says the smoke is drifting south from the Northwest Territories, carried by a cold front. A wildfire officer there reported that the main blaze has scorched 80,000 hectares and is burning just 900 metres from the town of Fort Providence. The fire forced hundreds of residents from their homes on Sunday.
While Calgary is far from the flames, the smoke has left the city with poor visibility and extremely unhealthy air. ECCC advises people to limit outdoor activity, especially strenuous exercise. Those most at risk include people with chronic lung conditions, seniors, children, and pregnant individuals.
Smoke exposure can trigger asthma attacks, chest pain, and heart palpitations in severe cases. Early warning signs include itchy eyes, sore throat, cough, congestion, and headaches.
