Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in India on Friday for a four-day visit aimed at strengthening trade ties and continuing efforts to repair Canada’s diplomatic relationship with the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Carney was welcomed at Mumbai’s airport with a red-carpet reception, joined by his wife, Diana Fox Carney. Government officials and the high commissioners of both countries were present to greet the Canadian delegation.
The trip is focused largely on economic cooperation, with Carney set to hold business meetings in Mumbai during the first two days of his visit. His first engagement was with Natarajan Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Group, India’s largest multinational conglomerate.
However, the visit comes against the backdrop of lingering concerns over allegations of foreign interference that previously strained relations between Ottawa and New Delhi. Those issues risk overshadowing Carney’s push to deepen trade and investment ties.
Carney is scheduled to travel to New Delhi on March 1, where he will meet directly with Modi as part of ongoing efforts to reset diplomatic and economic cooperation between the two countries.
