Authorities in Taber, Alberta, are warning residents about a growing problem involving the theft and misuse of cough medicines containing dextromethorphan (DXM).

The Taber Police Service says officers have seen a spike in shoplifting incidents targeting over-the-counter cough syrups, along with an increase in calls related to the drug’s abuse.

In a statement released Thursday, Police Chief Dr. Graham Abela cautioned that while DXM is considered safe when used according to directions, taking it in large quantities can be dangerous — especially for young people.

“Abuse of dextromethorphan, an ingredient found in many non-prescription cough remedies, carries serious health risks,” Abela said. “Excessive consumption can result in significant physical and psychological harm.”

Due to these concerns, local police are urging retailers to take preventive steps. Suggestions include placing products that contain DXM behind the counter and restricting sales to adults in an effort to reduce access and curb misuse within the community.
