Premier Danielle Smith has warned that the province faces a “significant” deficit, citing low oil prices and the financial pressures of rapid population growth, which she partly attributes to high federal immigration levels. Despite the looming shortfall, Smith has pledged that her government will avoid major tax increases or deep service cuts.
The United Conservative government has already outlined key priorities, including a $10.8-billion allocation to education—a seven per cent boost from last year—and a 22 per cent increase in funding for doctors, totaling $7.7 billion for pay and recruitment initiatives. Alberta’s budget continues to rely heavily on volatile oil and gas revenues, with no provincial sales tax to help stabilize finances.
