City of Calgary is set to launch a new Backyard Suite Incentive Program on Monday, March 2, 2026, aimed at addressing the city’s evolving housing needs and increasing gentle density in established neighbourhoods.
The program will provide homeowners with up to $15,000 to help cover general construction costs for building a backyard suite. In addition, applicants may receive up to 40 per cent of underground infrastructure expenses — to a maximum of $20,000 — when both onsite and offsite utility connections are required.
Additional funding will be available for projects that include accessibility features, involve heritage-designated properties, or meet specific requirements under the city’s Land Use Bylaw.
Kris Dietrich, Acting Director of Development, Business and Building Services, said the initiative is designed to expand housing options while maintaining neighbourhood character. “This program encourages the development of backyard suites while also keeping the community in mind with homes that fit into existing neighbourhoods,” he said.
Online engagement conducted in fall 2025 found strong public interest in the concept. Of nearly 700 respondents, 88 per cent indicated they were interested in building a backyard suite, signaling significant demand for flexible housing solutions.
